Challenge

Challenge

Climate change is becoming a pressing concern for many people, and a contributing factor to climate change is food waste. Given the option, most people would appreciate a straightforward method of reducing food waste, and that option becomes even more appealing when it’s less expensive than the existing alternative.

The task was set to create an online food finder that locates nearby eateries selling surplus food at a reduced price.

Development

Development

Thirty individuals were asked to participate in a short interview in order to better understand the market and build a stronger foundation for the project. The information gathered during the interview process became:

1. User Personas - It was possible to create three distinct personas. These personas represented a cross section of the intended target audience, and served as crucial reference points.

2. User Stories - A number of user stories were developed with the personas as a guide, resulting in an improved focus on their requirements, any potential pain points, and in turn a clearer project direction overall.

This project began with playful explorations around the speech bubble motif, eventually leading to a logo that combined a stylised letter ‘U’ with an umlaut turned smile.

The interface needed to support quick toggling between a list and map view, so layout and iconography were kept clean and intuitive.

Rounded corners, friendly shapes, and an energetic colour palette help to bring warmth and accessibility to the experience.

Product

The app features fixed tab navigation at the top of the screen, allowing the user to get what they want in as few clicks as possible. The Now tab displays local eateries in a list ordered by collection time.

The Near tab offers an alternative method to finding a food pickup based on proximity to the user, with local eateries being displayed on a map, because 'right around the corner' can be just as important as 'right now'.

Tapping an eatery displays information detailing the food being offered by that eatery, and importantly, how many portions there are remaining.

The Finder tab allows the user to search by name of eatery, a specific food, any dietary restrictions or a cuisine preference.

Results

Those early stage interviews really helped to steer the course of the project, and it shows. A CSAT score of 90%, with users praising the simplicity and feel-good aspect of the app. App Store ratings soared to 4.7 within the first 6 weeks, driven by positive feedback on usability and an eco-conscious approach. What's more, the app’s aesthetic and ethos created a brand users felt good about supporting, with brand recall jumping 35% in early surveys. Folk are hungry for Füd.
